  • plugin.json — plugin metadata (machine source of truth for name, version, description).
  • skills/prefine/SKILL.md — the skill definition.

Usage

For Codex standalone use, copy the repository's canonical agents/skills/prefine/ directory to ~/.agents/skills/prefine/, or a project's .agents/skills/prefine/. Start a new session and invoke $prefine with a draft. Use one installed copy to avoid duplicate discovery. To update, replace that installed directory from the chosen Git commit, including removal of obsolete resources, and start a new session. See Codex skill documentation.

For the bundled plugin in the ChatGPT desktop app, add a local marketplace entry whose source points to this complete plugin directory, restart the app, and install from that local source in the Plugins Directory. Follow the official local marketplace procedure for marketplace metadata. Update the source directory, restart the app, refresh the local source and reinstall/update the cached plugin, then start a new chat. Choose the plugin for release metadata and bundled distribution, or the standalone copy for a single skill. Avoid installing both.

These are documented client procedures, not automated client compatibility claims. CI checks file portability, Git checkout, structure, and synchronization. For a manual client smoke check, verify Prefine is discovered, submit a harmless draft such as “Refine: write a greeting,” and confirm it returns only a rewritten instruction without carrying out the draft. Repeat after client updates.

Prefine intentionally consults current external OpenAI prompting guidance when available. A pinned Git commit fixes shipped files but does not freeze retrieved guidance or model behavior. See skills/prefine/SKILL.md for the output contract.

Canonical source

The repository's agents/skills/prefine/ is canonical. This plugin's skills/prefine/ and .codex-plugin/plugin.json are generated by build.json; plugin.json here is the canonical metadata. Edit those inputs and run python3 scripts/repo.py sync from the repository root before committing.

See the repository generation workflow for checking output and adding entries. Generated files and their inventory are committed, including nested resources, so this plugin installs independently.
